Purchase Returns Guide
A purchase return sends items back to the supplier and corrects the bill and inventory impact.
Choose the return type
Create the return from a posted bill to inherit supplier, currency, and pricing, or create it independently and enter those details.
- A document can contain both bill-linked and standalone items.
- A linked item uses its bill price, discount, and tax.
Validation and approval
The system checks original quantity less prior non-cancelled returns, then routes the document through approval before posting.
- A linked return requires a posted bill.
- The lifecycle includes draft, pending approval, approved, posted, and cancelled.
Impact and cancellation
On posting, tracked stock is reduced and a reversing entry lowers payables and reverses inventory or expense, tax, and discount.
- Cancelling a posted return reverses its entry.
- Cancellation restores stock reduced during posting.
